Early Life
Lil Durk had a rough start in his early life. Because his father was imprisoned when Lil Durk was just seven months old, there were a lot of struggles for him and his mom. There were even times when Lil Durk said that the home didn’t even have enough food for them to live on. Then, he discovered Myspace, and as his online presence grew, he started to realize his desire to become a rapper.
Then, when he became a father at 19, he grew even more serious about the burgeoning possibility of having a career in music, so he dropped out of Paul Robeson High School to join the Black Disciples, a street gang in his hometown Chicago. Unfortunately, he did run into trouble with the law, eventually getting charged with aggravated unauthorized use of a weapon, for which he didn’t serve any jail time.
Then, things finally began to turn around, as his career took off in 2010.
Career
Upon being signed to Def Jam Recordings in 2013, Lil Durk didn’t waste any time in advancing his burgeoning career. Following the release of Signed to the Streets and Signed to the Streets 2, he started work on his debut album. Lil Durk’s album Remember My Name was released on June 2, 2015, following a short delay. Fans had a lot of things to hold them over, however, throughout the delay, as the album had already spawned the Lil Durk song, “Like Me,” featuring Jeremih.
When the album was released, sales soared pretty quickly, as more than 24,000 copies were sold in the first week, eventually allowing it to peak at number 14 on the Billboard 200. With a successful debut album under his belt, Lil Durk went back to his roots, releasing his next mixtape, 300 Days, 300 Nights, on December 15, 2015. This spurned the hit single “My Beyonce” featuring Dej Loaf, which was later certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Next for Lil Durk came his second studio album, Lil Durk 2x, released on July 22, 2016, with the singles “She Just Wanna,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, “Money Walk” featuring Yo Gotti, and “True,” serving as the album’s singles. Sadly, his second album did not perform nearly as well as his debut album, but Lil Durk didn’t let it get him down as he released his They Forgot mixtape.
With one successful album and one less-than-par album under his belt, Lil Durk decided to make some changes in his career in March 2018, as he parted ways with Def Jam Records and became a free agent for Apple Music and iTunes Store. Just a few months later, he announced his contract with Alamo Records and Interscope Records, under which he released his third studio album, Signed to the Streets 3, on November 9, 2018.
It was followed up by Love Songs 4 the Streets 2, released on August 2, 2019, as a follow-up to his 2017 mixtape of the same name. With featured guest appearances by King Von, Meek Mill, and even Nicki Minaj, it became his best-performing album to date, peaking at number four on the charts.
Riding on the success of his fourth studio album, the next of Lil Durk’s albums, released between 2020 and 2023, have included Just Cause Y’all Waited 2, The Voice, 7220, and Almost Healed. From there, he continued to produce several successful Lil Durk songs, including “3 Headed Goat,” featuring Polo G and Lil Baby. He was also featured on the tracks of other well-known artists, including “Laugh Now Cry Later” by Drake, “All These Niggas,” by OTF, and “Jonah” by Kanye West.
As the world continues to enjoy Almost Healed and its accompanying singles “All My Life,” “Pelle Coat,” and “F*ck U Thought,” it seems as though we can’t forget what Lil Durk said when he announced the album was upcoming.
“Growth. That’s what the ‘2.0’ stands for, just be on another level,” he said, referring to the album’s original title. “Just not only music-wise, like the things around me, as I told you, growing from the friends around me, management. As of May 2023, Lil Durk has accomplished three number-one songs in his career. His first came in 2020-2021 with “Laugh Now Cry Later” by Drake, on which Lil Durk was featured. The song held the coveted spot for six straight weeks.
