Celine Dion is a French-Canadian singer and one of the most successful musicians of all time. Born and raised in Canada, she started performing as a teenager and won a singing contest in 1988.

She is known most for her powerful ballads such as “My Heart Will Go On,” which was the theme song for the hit movie Titanic. Other hit songs performed by Celine Dion include “Because You Loved Me,” “The Power of Love,” “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” and many more.

Celine Dion was born on March 30, 1968, in Charlemagne, Quebec, Canada. Her full name is Celine Marie Claudette Dion on. She was the youngest in a family that included 14 other children in the small town where they grew up.

Celine Dion’s Family Once Owned a Piano Bar

As a young child, Dion’s family opened a piano bar called Le Vieux Baril, or The Old Barrel in their hometown. Celine even performed there starting when she was only five, which convinced those who heard her that she would someday become a star.

The Superstar Got a Record Deal Before She was a Teenager

At the tender age of 12, Celine Dion was offered a record deal by well-known music producer Rene Angelil. This was after she recorded her first song, “Ce N’etait Qu’un Reve,” which means “It Was Only a Dream.”

She Once Performed for the Pope

When she was only 16, Celine Dion was asked to perform at a concert in Montreal for Pope John Paul II. She sang “Une Colombe” for him and about 65,000 others at the Olympic Stadium when he visited Quebec.

It is widely known that Celine Dion and her music producer, Rene Angelil, who was 26 years older than her, became romantically involved when she was young. The couple married in 1994, which was not a surprise to many of her family and friends.

The Legendary Singer All But Disappeared When She was 18

Although she had a successful career by the time she was a teen, Celine Dion’s music producer pulled her from the spotlight when she was 18. During this time, they did much work to change her outward appearance and teach her many things that would bode well for her future career.

“My Heart Will Go On” was Recorded in One Take

Famously, Celine Dion was not fond of this song when it was first introduced to her, but Angelil talked her into recording a demo of it anyway. As luck would have it, they both ended up loving the first take and decided not to tempt fate by recording it again.

Celine and Rene Had to Use In Vitro Fertilization

The couple, although they wanted children, had trouble getting pregnant, so they ended up using in vitro fertilization. They now have three children, Rene-Charles, who was born in 2001, and then twin boys, Eddy and Nelson, who were born in 2010.

Her First American Tour was a Disaster

Although her success in crossing over from her French-Canadian roots was a success, her first tour in America, Unison, was met with disaster. The superstar fell victim to exhaustion and ended up losing her voice which forced her to cancel many of her scheduled performances.

She Launched a Gender-Neutral Clothing Line for Kids

From the time she had her first child, Dion was a strong advocate for keeping gender stereotypes away from her kids. She was so passionate about this that she launched a gender-neutral clothing line, Célinununu.

Celine Dion Put Her Career On Hold For Her Husband

Celine Dion’s much older husband, Rene, was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor which caused the superstar to put her career on hold indefinitely while they dealt with it. Unfortunately, Rene died of cancer in January of 2016.

Celine Dion Has an Odd Ritual Before Every Performance

After the death of her husband in 2016, she has wanted to ensure that his memory stays at the forefront of her mind and career. Because of this, she holds a bronze replica of his hand and shakes it before every performance since his death.
