Early Life

Willie learned guitar and piano from his sisters when he was a child. Amazingly, he began writing songs at the age of seven.

Nelson dropped out of high school in 1950 and joined the Air Force. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, where he played country music in clubs and bars.

After his discharge from the Air Force, Nelson returned to Texas, where he worked as a DJ and musician. In 1960, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in country music.
