What Neurological Disease Does Peter Frampton Have?

As time went on, Frampton admitted that the disease has affected his ability to perform. 

During the final leg of his Farewell Tour in November 2022, the singer was seen sitting down during the performance as it continued to become increasingly difficult for him to stand and perform with a guitar.

Peter Frampton’s diagnosis has come at a price. Although his IBM diagnosis has progressively affected the strength of his legs, he has said that it’s not his bad in his hands.

“It’s starting to affect my hands, but not enough yet, so I can still play a good lick. But I’ll be honest, I’m anxious about it,” he said in a September 2022 interview with Matt Owen of Guitar World, where he announced his intention to finish his farewell tour seated. 

“I haven’t played over there (the U.K.) in so long, and I have progressed in my disease.”

Is Inclusion Body Myositis Fatal?

A diagnosis of IBM is not in itself fatal, but life expectancy can be shortened due to the diseases affect on muscle strength and the problems that can develop from it. The disease is considered a slow progressing one.

Peter Frampton Research Foundation

Having found new purpose and inspiration after his diagnosis with IBM, Peter Frampton founded a research foundation at John Hopkins called the Peter Frampton Myositis Research Fund in 2019. 

One dollar from every ticket sold from his farewell tour and proceeds from t-shirt sales went to the fund.

Shriners Hospitals for Children also donated to the fund, contributing half of its fundraising sales from one of Frampton’s records. 

Other famous artists also contributed, with one doctor noting that some promoters had handed him checks for $5,000, unprompted, to put toward the fund.

By the end of Frampton’s farewell tour, donations totaled more than $275,000.

“I will always be raising awareness and money for my research fund,” Frampton said in an interview with Brain & Life.

Money from the fund will continue to help pay for clinical trials, including similar ones that Frampton himself enrolled in, which tests the effect of a diabetes drug to treat the disease.

Peter Frampton spent the final days of 2022 finishing his farewell tour before officially retiring from performing. 

On January 22, 2023, he did a one-night-only special performance at the Tucker Theatre on the Middle Tennessee State University campus in Murfreesboro.

The concert was free to fans to attend and was filmed and will be viewable later this year as part of a broadcast presentation presented by Sky Arts.
