Cher, sometimes referred to as the Goddess of Pop, is an American singer and actress whose career has spanned several decades. She got her start with duo Sonny and Cher before rising to the top as a solo artist with hits like “If I Could Turn Back Time.”

How Did Cher Get Rich?

Cher’s self-made career started in the mid-1960s when she became one half of the duo Sonny and Cher. The husband and wife pair released several songs including their first hit, “I Got You Babe,” which is still popular among fans today.

Along with the success of their music, Sonny and Cher also created a variety show that was an instant success. The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour paved the way for Cher to have her own show a few years later.

Once she broke away from Sonny Bono, she began a singing and acting career that would span several decades. To date, she has sold more than 100 million copies of her albums around the world which has led to her becoming one of the richest musicians.

Cher’s Cars

Although Cher is not widely known for owning any major type of vehicle, back in the mid-1960s Sonny and Cher owned a famous set of matching Ford Mustangs. This was because Ford was attempting to promote the car that they just developed.

The Ford Motor Company came up with the idea of gifting a pair of Ford Mustangs to the highly successful new couple. Sonny’s Mustang was painted Murano Gold and Cher’s was painted Hot Candy Pink.

Cher’s House

Cher has owned several houses and estates throughout her long career. While some of the homes were more modest than others, she has been known to sell them for quite a bit of money.

Her first home was the one that she owned alongside her then-husband, Sonny Bono. This home was located in Beverly Hills and was finally sold in 2016 for about $90 million.

She later purchased a condo in the Sierra Towers building, which she paid a little more than $4 million for and completely redecorated with a Buddhist inspiration. She sold it in 2015 for about $5 million.

Although most of her homes were in the Los Angeles area, she purchased a home facing the bay in Key Biscayne, Florida for just under $9 million. When she sold the home in 2019, she took quite a loss, selling it for just over $2 million.

The home she lived in the longest is on the cliffs of Malibu which overlook the ocean. It is a three-story mansion that has about 13,000 square feet of living space.

She has listed this home for sale several times, her latest was just recently where she reduced the price to about $75 million.

How Much Does Cher Make Per Show?

Throughout her career, Cher has played concerts, benefits, and other performances across the world. The amount she has made at these shows has varied depending on where the performance takes place.

One example of her success is her residency in Las Vegas that earned the superstar a healthy $300,000 per week. 

How Much Are Cher Tickets?

Depending on the location of the concert and the seat you choose, Cher tickets over the years have ranged from about $60 to more than $1,000 per ticket. What you pay has depended greatly on the venue and how close to the stage you choose to sit.

For example, while you may pay a maximum of about $320 in Kansas City, you may pay more than $1,000 at the Pensacola Bay Center. Festivals can be even more expensive depending on the other artists appearing. 

Cher is well known for her unique presence onstage, often appearing in crazy makeup and costumes. Therefore it is no surprise that you’ll have to spend a bit of cash to get a good seat at a Cher concert.

Cher’s Early Life

The legendary singer and actress was born Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946, in El Centro, California. Her parents were John Sarkisian and Jackie Jean Crouch, who later became Georgia Holt professionally.

Cher’s parents divorced when she was still a baby and she was ultimately raised by her mother who moved around quite a bit searching for work. At one point in her life, her mother left her at an orphanage so she would be taken care of while she looked for work.

She knew from a young age that she wanted to enter the world of entertainment and was interested in both acting and singing. She participated in various talent shows and other projects that would allow her to express her talents.

Cher left home at 16 to make the move to Los Angeles to pursue the career she had always wanted. During her early times in LA, this iconic celebrity took acting classes to improve her skill and worked as a dancer to make ends meet.

It was then that she ended up meeting Sonny Bono, who would change her life forever. It has been rumored that the famous duo met in a coffee shop and the rest is history.

Cher’s Career

Cher’s meeting with Sonny Bono led to him introducing her to his music producer, Phil Spector, who recognized her talents from the beginning. This meeting led her to being a backup singer and even performing with the Ronettes.

As Sonny and Cher grew closer, they eventually married and became the singing and acting duo that most people know them as. Sonny and Cher released their first song, “I Got You Babe,” in 1965, and it became an instant hit.

The debut album they released in 1965, Look at Us, ended up being extremely successful for them, with five songs making the Billboard Hot Top 50 chart. It’s rare to have so many hits from a single album.

Once the couple’s stardom began to dwindle, Cher began her solo career, releasing her first album, 3614 Jackson Highway. Although the couple were still together, this was a project Cher did on her own.

This was also about when the couple were offered the opportunity to host a television program that became The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. The success of this variety show helped them continue their fame, increased album sales, and kept them in the spotlight.

After the couple divorced in 1975, Cher’s rise to fame as a solo artist was kicked off with the signing of a record deal with Warner Bros. Records for just under $3 million. It was through this deal that she released an unsuccessful album, Stars, which caused her to return to television.

Although she had her show in the early 1970s, she was reunited onstage with her ex-husband to star in The Sonny and Cher Show. During this time, she also continued to pursue her musical career, releasing several albums.

The 1980s were a good time for Cher. She released popular singles like “If I Could Turn Back Time” and also began her many Las Vegas residencies. She also continued her acting career in films like Witches of Eastwick and Moonstruck.

She has continued to releasing music into the following decades. At 52, she became one of the oldest pop musicians to have a number-one hit on the US Billboard music charts. “Believe” is still one of her top tracks today, even though it was released in 1995. 

As late as 2021 she released a new single, “Walls.” While many of her later songs are remix versions, she continues touring and receiving Grammy Awards for her singing and songwriting. 

Recent pop albums she’s released include Dancing Queen (which was a compilation) and Closer to the Truth. She has also released several singles during the last decade beyond these two albums. 

In addition to her singing and acting, Cher also has some business ventures. She has a fashion line based on her style as well as two fragrances inspired by her.

Cher’s Collaborations

Through the years, Cher has had many collaborations with famous musicians.

Her most famous ones are “Shame, Shame, Shame” with Tina Turner and “Variety” with Carol Burnett. She has even sung songs from the popular group ABBA alongside Meryl Streep.

Other artists she has sung with include David Bowie, Elton John, Cyndi Lauper, and Bette Midler. 

Cher’s Marriages

Cher’s most notable marriage was to Sonny Bono, whom she met when she moved to Los Angeles at 16. While they did not become romantically involved until a few years later, the couple married in 1964. Their marriage ended in 1975, only nine years after it started.

Shortly after her divorce was finalized with Sonny Bono, Cher married Greg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band. The couple divorced a few days later but then reconciled again. Their final divorce would occur in 1979, just a few years after it began.

Cher’s Children

Cher and Sonny Bono had one child, Chastity Bono, who is now known as Chaz Bono. During their divorce, they had quite the battle for custody of the child.

Her second marriage to Greg Allman resulted in the birth of their son, Elijah Blue Allman. The relationship with her son has not always been pleasant.
