Bob Dylan’s Early Life

Bob Dylan was born on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota to parents from a tight-knit Jewish family. His real name at the time of his birth was Robert Allen Zimmerman as he grew up in Minnesota, first in Duluth, then later in Hibbing.

It has been reported that Dylan was the grandson of immigrants from both Ukraine and Lithuania in the early 1900s. This led to him being raised in a Jewish community until they moved back to his mother’s hometown when he was only six years old.

Throughout his high school career, Dylan became interested in music and even formed several different bands along the way. These bands spanned the musical genres of folk, rock, country, and blues since Dylan was interested in all types of music.

After he graduated high school, he enrolled in the University of Minnesota where he joined a fraternity but later dropped out. This was due to his early performances at local coffee shops under the name Bob Dylan, which gave him a taste of what the music industry would be like.

The Lie That Landed Bob Dylan’s Record Deal

Since he was considered to be a minor at the time they chose to sign him, he lied about having parents who could cosign.

That’s right, the legendary Bob Dylan told Columbia Records executives that he was an orphan and therefore could not have his parents cosign for him. Because of this the record executives lifted the requirement and signed him anyway

Once he was signed with Columbia Records, it was quite a shock that his debut album, Bob Dylan, which was released in 1962, did not have much success. The executives at the record label chose not to give up on him though.

By the time his second album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan ,was released in 1963, however, he had gained some success. It was through this album that he was dubbed as a successful singer and songwriter who also was a political activist. Everyone from the Beatles to Johnny Cash loved it.

Between 1964 and 1966, Bob Dylan released five additional albums, which was unheard of with musical artists. These albums were extremely successful, even when they weren’t as politically charged.

Dylan continued to perform and gain popularity all through the sixties and seventies to the present day. To date, Dylan has released a total of about 35 studio albums that have varied in success.

Along with his albums, Bob Dylan has been dedicated to touring and performing for his fans around the world. He has written music from many genres, with a music catalog that includes rock & roll music, country music, folk music, folk-rock, and even some pop.

Bob Dylan has been married only twice, although he has been connected with several women over the years. His two marriages include one that lasted a bit longer than 10 years and another which lasted less than 10 years.

He reportedly married Sara Lownds in 1965 and then the couple divorced in 1977. He later married Carolyn Dennis, who was his backup singer, but later divorced in 1992.

Through two marriages, Bob Dylan has a total of six children, most of which came as a result of his first marriage to Sara Lownds. The couple was married for about 12 years, and in addition to the four children they had together, Dylan also adopted Lownds’ daughter from a previous marriage.

When Lownds and Dylan married in 1965, his wife already had a daughter from a previous marriage. Maria Dylan was officially adopted in 1966, and today she lives out of the spotlight and works as a film producer.

Dylan’s oldest child, a son named Jesse Byron Dylan, was born in 1966, which is the same year of the adoption of Maria. Jesse is reportedly a film producer and director.

Anna Leigh Dylan came along in 1967 and works as an artist in Santa Monica, California, away from the life her father chose to lead. Samuel Isaac Abram Dylan, like Anna, chose to live out of the spotlight as a photographer and was born in 1968.

The last child between Dylan and Sara Lownds is Jakob Luke Dylan, who was born in 1969 and is the only one of his children to follow in his footsteps. Jakob was the founding member of the band The Wallflowers, who were an extremely successful music group in the early 1990s.

With his second wife, Carolyn Dennis, he had another child, the youngest, Desiree Gabrielle Dennis-Dylan was born in 1986. Although he was married to Dennis, Desiree is the child that not many people even knew existed until an unauthorized biography was released in the early 2000s.
