R&B superstar, Kehlani Ashley Parrish, took the Myth by storm on Saturday night. The Oakland-native is currently on a massive North American tour in promotion of her debut full-length album, SweetSexySavage. Thankfully this show was upgraded from Mill City Nights to the Myth- not only for capacity reasons, but also because Parrish hit the stage accompanied by a live band, a DJ, and two back-up dancers.

Kehlani opened her set with “Keep On,” the first song on SSS. The 22-year-old flaunted her dance background with impressive choreography right off the bat. If anyone was unaware, it was obvious Kehlani is a true performer just after the first song. Not only can she sing and dance phenomenally, she manages to captivate the audience and had girls clawing to get to the front row.

Despite the madness in the crowd, she continued in to her second single, “Distraction.” The sultry tune highlights Kehlani’s spectacular vocal range. She proceeded to perform nearly all of the songs on SSS as well as other works such as “The Way,” from her You Should Be Here EP, and “Gangsta,” which appeared on Suicide Squad: The Album.

Throughout the entire night, Kehlani spread the message of love and acceptance for one another. Whether it be for members of the LGBT community, people of color, or just yourself, Kehlani wanted every person there to leave with a positive outlook on life. She also advocated to support local music and brought out St. Paul rapper, Lexii Alijai, to perform two of her own songs  mid-set.

Against all odds, Kehlani has emerged a talented and passionate artist who genuinely deserves all of the success in the world and truly embodies the aptly named record.
