Career

Upon being chosen as the new lead singer of Faith No More, Mike Patton’s career was off and running, beginning with several live shows that the band played together. Then, he was officially announced as the new lead singer in January 1989 as Chuck Mosley’s replacement.

Although it meant that Patton had to forego his education at Humboldt State University, it didn’t seem to phase him.

Patton’s first album with Faith No More came in 1989 with The Real Thing, which reached the top 20 on the charts and got much recognition for the music video for the single “Epic,” which was a hit on MTV. From there, three more albums were released over the next nine years – Angel DustKing for a Day … Fool for a Lifetime, and Album of the Year. But then, the band disbanded, with Patton noting the declining quality of the band’s work as part of the reason.

Thankfully, Faith No More fans could rejoice on February 24, 2009, when the band announced it would reunite after more than ten years apart. That led to The Second Coming Tour reunion and the release of the compilation album The Very Best Definitive Ultimate Greatest Hits Collection in the UK on June 8, 2009. This was all followed by the release of the album Sol Invictus in 2015.

Although Faith No More disbanded for several years, Patton did not sit around doing nothing. Even while with the band during its original run, Patton didn’t stop working with Mr. Bungle, and his success is what helped the band obtain a Warner Bros. record deal.

With that record deal, the band released four studio albums between 1991 and 2020, including their self-titled debut album, Disco VolanteCalifornia, and The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo.

What Patton really delved into during this time, however, were his solo projects. These included the Mike Patton albums Adult Themes for Voice (1996), Pranzo Oltranzista (1997), and Mondo Cane (2010). He also delved into film scores, writing for such movies as A Perfect Place (2008), The Solitude of Prime Numbers (2011), 1922 (2018), and more.

Still, over the years, he never got bored because of his many bands, including Fantômas, formed in 1998, and Tomahawk, formed in 1999, among others.

It seems that there is no adventure that Patton is too shy to tackle, and it’s become a huge part of the legacy that will live with him forever. It is what has earned him the moniker of “Renaissance man” by several publications.

According to English singer-songwriter Robert Barry, “The world [Patton] moves in is occupied as much by academically-minded and conservatory-trained musicians as punks and freaks. […] [But his diversity] should not be dismissed as superficial po-mo posturing. In fact, it could be compared to that of Olivier Messiaen. […] ‘There is nothing superficial about Messiaen’s eclecticism,’ said conductor Pierre Boulex, and ‘Just as we can speak of eclecticism in his choice of composers, so his actual style of writing – juxtaposing and superimposing rather than developing and transforming – may be called eclectic.’ Words that could just as easily have been written about Patton.”

His talent has left nothing to be desired, either. He has shown off his skills in everything from alternative metal to contemporary classics, art pop, and even rapping and beatboxing.

“Patton could very well be one of the most versatile and talented singers in rock music,” critic Greg Prato once wrote. Further, Blake Butler said that Patton is “a complete and utter musical visionary and a mind-blowing and standard-warping genius.”

Through it all, Patton has continued to remain humble. In 2013, he said of his music, “I’m not a poet. I’m not up onstage to get something off my chest. I’m making musical statements or, most of the time, musical questions for people to figure out, and I’m not going to get in the way of that.”

With all this in mind, we only have one thing to say: Mike Patton has been a complete gift to the world of music, and we cannot wait to find out what he will grace us with next.
