A Night of Nostalgia at First Avenue with American Football

Sunday night at First Avenue in Minneapolis was an unforgettable experience for me and the many dedicated fans of American Football and Afternoon Bike Ride. Both bands delivered performances that brought the entire venue together. The atmosphere was reminiscent of a 1990s romance film, filled with nostalgia, melancholy, and a sense of pure bliss.

American Football, the headlining act, was met with an enthusiastic reception from the crowd, myself included. The band began their journey in 1998 and quickly became known for redefining the math rock genre while developing a dedicated cult following.

Their history has included both successes and periods of inactivity, but in 2014, the band returned with members Mike Kinsella and Steve Holmes at the forefront. Since then, they have continued to reconnect with longtime fans by re-releasing their beloved albums and sharing previously unreleased demos, recordings, and live performances.

American Football’s music incorporates a wide variety of sounds and styles, which made their performance especially enjoyable to experience live. One of the highlights of the evening came when drummer Steve Lamos played the trumpet beneath an orange light surrounded by blue.

His silhouette was projected against the back wall, transforming the venue into something that felt reminiscent of the jazz influences that were part of the band’s early years. It was easy to imagine what those early jam sessions might have looked like.

Their current tour, which runs from February through September, features a variety of talented supporting acts. On Sunday night, Afternoon Bike Ride opened the show and immediately created an inviting atmosphere for the audience.

Afternoon Bike Ride was an excellent supporting act. Lead singer Lia Kurihara demonstrated a beautiful live voice that was just as impressive as it is on the band’s recordings.

Before several songs, she briefly introduced the music and encouraged the audience to participate by making bird sounds and singing along. These moments created a strong connection between the band and the crowd, especially when Kurihara reached the higher notes in her vocals.

The combination of keyboards, synthesizers, and vocals created an atmosphere that felt both natural and urban. At times, the music made me feel as though I were sitting in a sunroom surrounded by nature, only to be transported back into the streets of a city, searching for the love of your life.

A special shout-out goes to First Avenue for providing an incredible venue for the event. The lighting and sound production complemented both performances and helped create an atmosphere that made the night feel even more immersive.

Together, American Football and Afternoon Bike Ride gave the audience the experience we had hoped for. From crowd surfing and making bird sounds to simply standing together and enjoying the music, the entire venue felt connected.

Everyone seemed to become friends for the night. Couples held onto each other beneath the many colors of the neon lights, while the venue remained packed with devoted fans of both bands.

It was a night defined by music, community, nostalgia, and shared excitement. I look forward to seeing both bands return to the Twin Cities and wish them the best for the remainder of their tour.
