With a peek behind the curtain, alt-pop wizard Dora Jar began her set by doing her makeup—on stage. Gazing into the spotlight with calm confidence, the singer painted her face with lipstick, a little on the lips and a dab on the cheeks, followed by a healthy coating of mascara.
The ‘Puppet’ singer is a natural performer, zigzagging across the stage with a physical presence of a French mime. It was a relief that, in return, her Minnesota audience gave an equal return of energy, a few screams piercing the air with the start of each new song.
The set was a wonderful flow of old and new tunes, brought together by a seamless transition of guitars from the guitar tech. I found myself excited every time the singer was unencumbered by an instrument—a surefire indicator that she would be able to use the full stage with her physicality, at one point even doing the splits. In jeans!
The artist’s talented drummer, guitarist, and bass player were awesome additions to the night, bringing clear joy and playfulness while anchoring the bounding, fairy-like swirls of Dora Jar’s music. The friendships between the various members of the band were evident and fun to observe.
Posting on her Instagram story that the St. Paul show left her feeling “better than she ever had” after a performance, it was clear that Dora enjoyed the night as much as we did.
