How Did Bret Michaels Become Famous?

Bret Michaels was first recognized amongst fans when the rock band Poison came onto the scene in the early 1980s. The band is one of the most popular worldwide, having sold more than 50 million albums worldwide and 15 million records in the United States.

Michaels formed the band with Bobby Dall on bass, David Besselman on guitar, and Rikki Rockett on the drums. After replacing Besselman with Matt Smith, they were first known as Paris and played the bar circuit around Pennsylvania.

By 1984, the band grew tired of the scene, moved to Los Angeles, changed their name, and the rest is history.

With Smith now replaced by C.C. DeVille, the band achieved national fame after an initially unsuccessful debut album, Look What the Cat Dragged In, went platinum after filming a music video for the single “Talk Dirty to Me” in 1987.

Bret Michaels’ Career

With a platinum album under their belts, Bret Michaels’ time with Poison only continued to grow as he recorded “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” dubbed “the ultimate ’80s anthem about heartbreak,” in 1988, which was included on the band’s second album, Open Up and Say…Ahh!

That was followed two years later by the multi-platinum-selling Flesh & Blood, which sparked the 1990-91 “Flesh and Blood” World Tour.

Things continued with the band as more changes happened among members after an incident at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards, which resulted in DeVille being replaced by Richie Kotzen before recording their fourth album Native Tongue and yet another guitarist, Blues Saraceno playing on Crack a Smile… and More!

By 1999, DeVille was back as a guitarist in time for the 1999 reunion greatest hits tour.

As Poison continued their success, Michaels also broke out in a solo career come 2003 with such Bret Michaels albums as Songs of Life (2003), Freedom of Sound (2005), Custom Built (2010), and Jammin’ with Friends (2013). He also released the compilation album True Grit in 2015.

These albums brought about such classic Bret Michaels songs as “Raine,” “Right Now, Right Here,” “Go That Far,” and “Nothing to Lose,” which featured guest vocals by Miley Cyrus.

As his music career continued to soar with success, Bret Michaels broke out into a new medium with his VH1 reality show Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It in 2010, which only lasted one season.

The “A Beautiful Soul” singer also recorded songs for other projects such as “Hit and Roll” for the television series Top Gear and a soundtrack album for the 1998 film A Letter from Death Row, which he also starred in, wrote, and directed.

In 2020, he released his autobiography, Bret Michaels: Auto-Scrap-ography Volume 1: My Life in Pictures & Stories.

He isn’t slowing down anytime soon. His most recent endeavor included releasing a new single, “Back in the Day,” in Jan. 2023 and announcing his Parti-Gras Tour with dates spread out between Jul. 13 through Aug. 6.

Bret Michaels’ Health

Bret Michaels has had his share of health struggles, which started at a young age.

How old was Bret Michaels when he got diabetes? He was only 6 when he fell ill with Type 1 diabetes, which led to a three-week hospital stay.

He officially announced his struggle with diabetes in the early days of Poison when his fear of playing their headlining show at Madison Square Garden in March 1987 led to him taking his insulin injection without eating anything and therefore collapsing on stage due to insulin shock.

His biggest year of health scares came in 2010, when his official website reported on May 20, 2010, that he was “readmitted to the hospital the week after suffering numbness on the left side of his body,” which led to his diagnosis of a “patent foramen ovale” or a hole in the heart.

To the relief of fans, doctors “diagnosed the problem that caused the transient ischemic attack or warning stroke and feel it is highly unlikely this is connected to the brain hemorrhage he suffered” a few weeks prior.

The brain hemorrhage is believed to have potentially been caused by an accident at the 63rd Tony Awards on June 7, 2009, when Michaels was struck on the head when part of the set fell.

That led to the “Unbroken” singer filing a lawsuit against the Tony Awards and CBS. Two years later, the case was settled outside of court for an undisclosed amount.

Michaels publicly talked about the crazy year in October 2011: “2010 was, without question, a roller coaster year for me. But when you have an amazing family, and you still have a lot of music left to make, and you have such incredible and supportive fans behind you, you’re going to fight until the very last breath before you throw in that towel.”

He openly credits St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center’s Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix for saving his life.

In 2020, Michaels had yet another health scare when it was announced that he was diagnosed with skin cancer.

“I’m going to have to undergo a procedure to eliminate skin cancer that was detected after a recent biopsy. I am in the hands of incredible experts who are positive for excellent results,” Michaels said in a post to fans.

In 2022, he was forced to miss an appearance with Poison in Nashville due to a last-minute hospitalization, which included several tests and administering IV fluids.
