Valerie Bertinelli found fame in her adolescent years, portraying Barbara Cooper Royer on the famed sitcom One Day at a Time for nine long years (1975-1984).

She starred alongside Bonnie Franklin, Mackenzie Phillips, and Pat Harrington, Jr., throughout the show’s run.

In 2005, Bertinelli reunited with the cast for a One Day at a Time Reunion Special, during which the cast watched some of the most memorable clips from the classic sitcom and talked about some behind-the-scenes secrets.

She was so memorable on the show that she earned two Golden Globe Awards two years in a row (1981-1982) as the Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries, or Motion Picture Made for Television.  

Valerie Bertinelli’s Career

With the success of One Day at a Time to catapult off of, Bertinelli did her best to make the transition from being an adolescent actor to an adult in Hollywood.

Her first few attempts only earned her minor recognition as she starred in some made-for-television movies and made some guest appearances.

It seemed as though she would find success again when she was cast in two separate sitcoms in the 1990s – Sydney, alongside Matthew Perry and Craig Bierko, and Café Americain – both of which were short-lived.

Finally, in 2001, she made her breakthrough as an adult actor when she was cast as Gloria in the hit show Touched by An Angel for its final two seasons.

Nine years later, she was cast as Melanie Moretti in the hit TV Land sitcom Hot in Cleveland, which she starred in alongside Betty White, Wendi Malick, and Jane Leeves from 2010-2015.

The role earned her a Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Alongside her acting endeavors, Bertinelli gained recognition for her work as a spokesperson for Jenny Craig and for her many autobiographies and memoirs, including Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back (2008), Finding It: And Satisfying My Hunger for Life Without Opening the Fridge (2009), and Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today (2022).

Valerie Bertinelli may look like that innocent face that wouldn’t be into permanent ink, but she proved otherwise in June 2015 when she posted a photo matching tattoos with her son on Instagram.
