This past weekend, I arrived at First Avenue and was greeted by a short line in front of the club. I walked in about halfway through Joywave‘s opening set, and the place was already packed.

It seemed like everyone who bought tickets arrived early to catch their 45-minute performance, and it wasn’t hard to see why. Joywave’s frontman/vocalist produced an energy that spawned many hands in the air and plenty of movement on the floor.

It had been a while since I had attended a sold-out Main Room show. It always surprises me how many people they can fit in the venue when they need to. I was even more surprised to find some decent sight lines from the back of the crowd. People were in every nook and cranny, trying to stay out of the way of the foot traffic to and from the bartenders.

Two Door Cinema Club took the stage around 9 o’clock, and the crowd was quickly transported back by the nostalgia of the mid-2010’s. Compared to the openers, they were more stationary on stage. However, their refined sound, centered heavily on the dreamy vocals of Alex Trimble, had the sold-out club mesmerized from the very start.

I couldn’t blame Trimble for his lack of movement; it’s hard to dance in a two-piece suit. The band’s instrumental talent, paired with Trimble’s vocals, created a great atmosphere, and everyone was singing along.

While watching the show, I realized that I was witnessing a great group of showmen, and it was clear to me why this band has been so successful and continues to sell out shows.

The band actually has a second show booked in Minneapolis later this year, playing the Fillmore on September 29. So anyone who missed the show this past weekend will have another chance to catch Two Door Cinema Club.
