Meet KIPANI, a musical journey sparked by singer/songwriter Tiffany Jhingoor in 2020. Originating from Tiffany’s fusion of theater roots with personal songwriting, KIPANI brings you the vibrant world of “Diary-Pop.”

With drummer Mike McManamon and guitarist/bassist Sean Sherwood joining the ensemble, the trio honed their dynamic sound through live performances, leading to the release of their acclaimed “LOTUS EP” in 2021.

In 2023, KIPANI released “Spoiled Ingrates,” a musical evolution blending live instruments and electronica. Their performances, influenced by theater techniques, create a sensory experience, inviting you into a world where raw emotion meets innovative storytelling.

Most recently, the band released their single “Do We Have To Go,” which is on their anticipated 2024 EP. Influenced by artists like Miya Folick, Vulfpeck, and Blink-182, KIPANI’s music is a journey through the complexities of life—authentic, relatable, and undeniably magnetic.

Check out the band’s single from their single, “Do We Have To Go”, and read our interview with KIPANI below.

MIM: Can you describe what the genre “Diary Pop” means?

KIPANI: We have coined a new sub-genre that we call “Diary Pop”. It showcases a dynamic sound born from live experiences, intricate arrangements, and Tiffany’s introspective lyrics.

MIM: What inspires you to create music?

KIPANI: Sharing our story, no matter how vulnerable it may be, is the most important part of what inspires us to create music. If even one person can relate or feel heard by our lyrics and experiences, then it makes everything that much more valuable. That is what motivates us to continue to wear our hearts on our sleeve.

MIM: Tell us about the creation process of this project.

KIPANI: “Do We Have To Go” is a lo-fi indie anthem capturing the essence of introversion. We learned about a new instrument while making this song. It’s called a Hand Shaker Juju, and now we couldn’t imagine the song without it!

MIM: What does this project mean to you?

KIPANI: This particular song really hits home for us. A lot of our music centers around the constant struggle with anxiety, and one of the biggest triggers for that is social obligations. “Do We Have To Go” resonates with introverts, offering a melodic escape. We hope that this song acts as a sign for those who need it that it’s okay to have these emotions and not give in to societal pressure if that is what feels right to you and what you need in that moment.

MIM: What can listeners look forward to from you?

KIPANI: Lots and lots of new music!! We have been working super hard in the studio and have some very exciting releases all lined up for 2024! Also, we have some pretty big Spring/Summer tour plans in the works and might be coming to a city near you.

MIM: Anything else you’d like to add?

KIPANI: We like to think that we are really fun on social media, so give us a follow on Instagram, Tiktok and X or all things Kipani 🙂
