Bruce Springsteen’s Career

It isn’t surprising that one of the bestselling musical artists ever started his love of music early, and that’s exactly the case with Bruce Springsteen.

He was always interested in music, even from his early life at St. Rose of Lima Catholic School. Seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show was a huge turning point in his life. He had trouble paying attention in high school, so he saved up for his first guitar and never looked back.

The Boss played solo and with bands in the late 60s and early 70s, including the Castiles, Steel Earth, Steel Mill, and the Sundance Blues Band.

He eventually left them to focus on the Bruce Springsteen band, and the rest is history.

The legendary American singer-songwriter first made a commercial splash in 1973 with his debut studio album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. His sophomore album, The Wild, The Innocent, & the E Street Shuffle, was released the same year.

Because he was first promoted by Columbia Records talent scout John Hammond Sr., who also discovered everyone from Count Basie to Bob Dylan to Aretha Franklin, expectations were high. He was even heralded as “the new Bob Dylan.”

His first albums were moderate successes, but the career of the Grammy-winning singer took off with his third release, 1975’s Born to Run. The title song, “Tenth Avenue Freezeout,” and “Thunder Road” are just three of its popular tracks.

He followed the success of Born to Run with a string of classic Bruce Springsteen albums in the late 70s and early 80s: Darkness on the Edge of Town, double album The River, and folk masterpiece Nebraska.

The peak of his popularity, however, came with 1984’s Born in the U.S.A., which became a cultural phenomenon and sold over 17 million copies. Among its seven hit singles were “Dancing in the Dark,” “I’m on Fire,” “Glory Days,” and “Cover Me.”

Springsteen continued releasing albums throughout the 80s, 90s, and beyond, many to popular and critical acclaim. Highlights include 1995’s The Ghost of Tom Joad, 2002’s 9/11 homage The Rising, and the more pop/rock-oriented Magic (2007)

Bruce Springsteen tours have always been a must-see for any classic rock fan. His marathon concerts with his legendary E Street Band have often gone over four hours.
