Along with being a model and actress, Julianne Phillips is best known for being the first wife of famed rock star Bruce Springsteen. The pair first met in October 1984 and were married less than a year later, on May 13, 1984, in Lake Oswego. It only took three years for the pair to eventually split, filing for divorce in August 1988, citing irreconcilable differences in the divorce filings.

The split was final in March 1989.

Let’s dive a little deeper into the pair’s relationship, shall we?

How did Bruce meet Julianne? Springsteen has his tour agent, Barry Bell, to thank for bringing the two of them together. The pair met backstage during one of the “Born to Run” singer’s concerts in Los Angeles.

Or perhaps Springsteen doesn’t want to thank Bell for the introduction. Why did Bruce divorce Julianne? According to Springsteen himself, age was the biggest difference. Springsteen was in his mid-30s when they met and married, while Phillips had just turned 25 when they tied the knot.

Further, Springsteen said he was emotionally unavailable during their marriage. “She’s a woman of great discretion and decency and always dealt with me and our problems honestly and in good faith, but in the end, we didn’t really know. I placed her in a terribly difficult position for a young girl, and I failed her as a husband and partner.”

Referencing the early days of their romance, he couldn’t have thought higher of his ex-wife. “There, as we politely chatted by candlelight, hand in hand, a part of me tried to convince myself that [Phillips] was simply using me to further her career or to get … something. Nothing could’ve been farther from the truth,” he said. “Julianne loved me and didn’t have an exploitive or malicious bone in her body.”

Later, when Springsteen penned his memoir Born to Run in 2016, he noted that his growing attraction and affection for Patti Scialfa, his bandmate and later wife, played a role in the marriage falling apart, too.

Is Julianne Phillips currently married? As of now, she is single with no significant relationships to note since the divorce either.
