Japanese Breakfast Premieres New Album at 7th Street Entry

Tuesday nights aren’t often treated as a highly acclaimed night to get out and enjoy the live music coming to town. When it comes to the historic setting of First Avenue, however, the norms of every other venue never seem to apply. As I stood shoulder to shoulder in the packed baby brother room of 7th Street Entry, I couldn’t help but be instantly impressed with the turnout and energy of a crowd that helped sell out this mid-week gig. Sitting and patiently waiting through the change over of acts from the opener, I was greeted with a warm, mellow lo-fi vibe that seemed to fit the evening as Japanese Breakfast took the stage.

Frontwoman Michelle Zauner graced the stage with her supporting three-piece band and dove into a set of upbeat, beach style psy-pop that spanned old and brand new alike to the packed floor of fans. Japanese Breakfast started off softly and humbly, embracing their time back in Minneapolis for the “fourth or fifth time this year” as Michelle would admit a few selections in. The energy on stage was soon amplified during a run of unreleased tracks that married rich and passionate spacy vocals; dance filled break beats; and ‘80s driven synths that compliment their latest single, Machinist, as the direction they may be heading next.

Japanese Breakfast’s sophomore release, Soft Sounds From Another Planet, was released this past Friday with a supporting headlining tour to follow which will land them back in front of familiar faces again for yet another stop in the coming months. Don’t miss out on expanding your summer playlist with Japanese Breakfast’s latest project and be sure to keep an eye out for their next stop in Minnesota which is likely to be nothing short of a sold out, movin’ and dancing good time.
