Harbor & Home is a local Alternative Rock band from the streets of Minneapolis, Minnesota, founded by Kaleb Williams and Nathan Johnson. They have been around for a few years playing as more of a Folk/ Americana group, but have recently changed things up with some new members and new songs.

Being the only show H&H intends to play in Minneapolis this summer, the group chose the Music Box Theater as their venue to celebrate on July 30th and invited friends whosah and MISCH to the bill.

I did not expect the location to have built in seating, however my twenty-eight year old body was enjoying the option sitting rather than standing, as the older adults did as well.

Setting the tone, MISCH started off the night with her Indie-electronic/folk mixture, which left listeners peacefully satisfied, sunken comfortably into their seats.

Indie pop group, Whosah got the crowd going next. Frontman Spencer Grimes, known for his fast foot-work, energetically bounced back and fourth around the stage, covering as much ground as he could without running into his fellow bandmates.

Nate Flynn, (former bassist of Epitaph Records’ pop band Sing It Loud) spins around with a flying kick and encourages attendees to get on his level. He hangs up his guitar, steps out into the seated area and quickly begins telling everyone to stand up and dance as he runs through the rows of people (my twenty-eight year old body is reluctant, but joins in), just in time to get back on stage for his bass part to enter back into the song.

Shoe gazing Dallas Erdahl always dresses to impress as if the crowd would fail to acknowledge the sounds coming from his summery vibin’ guitar, bringing each song to life. We noticed Dallas, and we give you style points for the light up kicks!

With Dave Grimes on drums and Mackenzie on lead guitar, they proved themselves to everyone watching that they weren’t just playing good tunes, but they were also having fun doing it!

Once whosah rapped things up, there was a quiet buzz going around anticipating the members of Harbor & Home to wow us with their new material. What might this new arrangement of members have conjured up?

Finally, Harbor & Home charges the stage and rips a heavy hitting four on the floor tune that nobody was familiar with, but couldn’t help but to stomp along with the beat. With Johnny Q on bass guitar, Erik Bear hitting hard on drums and Josh Clutter fingering intricate leads on electric guitar filled out the five piece group filled the small venue with a mighty sound. But that’s not all. Their friend Andy Davie from Wales, United Kingdom joined them on rhythm guitar and plans to continue helping out for the rest of the summer!

Their tone  you’d hear from experienced musical veterans. Well, I suppose they’re well on their way to becoming such, as each musician has spent over a decade refining their instrument, and it definitely shows.

However, I would not classify Harbor & Home as an Alternative Rock band. Kaleb Williams’ leads the performance with folksy vocals and aggressive acoustic guitar strums, which gives them a sound similar to the likes of Mumford & Sons, Phillip Phillips, Of Monsters & Men or The Lumineers.
