Clothed in all white like a choir of angels they could effortlessly upstage, Boyz II Men brought a heavenly performance to the Twin Cities Sunday night.
The romantic R&B trio stole the hearts of many long-time fans at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts with a 17-song setlist and an upbeat, yet tender zest.
They’ve Still Got It
Kicking the night off with Thank You followed immediately by a seamless transition into Motown Philly, Boyz II Men ensured that each member of the audience had a reason to dance.
One might assume a group that has been making music for 27 years could easily become complacent or robotic, however, Boyz II Men broke that stigma with ease.
All three members were beaming throughout their performance, while never missing an opportunity to throw in a dance move or partake in a photo-op with fans seated in the front row.
They’ve Got You Covered
Though, naturally, Boyz II Men invited all to sing along to many of their hit songs, some true highlights of the night involved several covers they have perfected instead of focusing on only their beloved originals.
The diversity of these covers ranged anywhere from American Woman by Lenny Kravitz to Bruno Mars’ Locked Out of Heaven and touched everywhere in between. This merely gave fans a taste of the talent that Boyz II Men possess.
Audience members were also surprised to learn that Amazed, a popular song by country group Lonestar, was originally meant for Boyz II Men to have the rights to.
To reiterate that fact, the trio performed a rendition of the song in what they claimed was “the way it was meant to be.” This point was made clear as Boyz II Men took a song that most would think was never in need of improvement and were able to perfect it with ease.
Roses and Romance
Of course, no Boyz II Men show would be complete without hit love song I’ll Make Love To You.
In his introduction, member Wanya Morris jokingly admitted the song was probably the reason why so many of their younger fans were in existence in the first place. (Wink wink, nudge nudge.)
Certainly, these suave and romance-savvy artists could not simply perform the iconic piece without adding something extra. This is why they each could be found with an immaculate bouquet of roses that they passed out to fans during their serenade.
However, the most wholesome moment was when Morris took the opportunity to recognize and highlight the tremendous work of the ASL interpreter in attendance by giving her the final rose. (See video below).
Can Love Go Out of Style?
All in all, Boyz II Men left fans with a fondness for wholesome entertainment, gratitude for a nostalgic Sunday evening well-spent, and a longing for good old-fashioned love songs.
It is for this reason that Boyz II Men stand the test of time, as they continue to promote love and positivity 27 years later, in ways that may seem to have been lost in current music trends.
But there is one beacon of hope – if the saying about trends coming back in style every few years holds true, perhaps we aren’t too far off from the rebirth of Boyz II Men-inspired, authentic love songs after all.
The day the cycle comes full circle will be One Sweet Day.
