They were so poor that his mother struggled to pay for housing and even basic necessities. His rough upbringing led him to join a gang, the Bloods, when he was very young.
His involvement soon led to his first run-in with the law. In 2015, he was arrested for shooting at some students near Vero Beach High School. His charges led to a conviction, and he was in prison for several months.
Career
YNW Melly was 15 years old when he first started posting his original songs and raps to SoundCloud.
After being released from jail after his aggravated battery and assault, and discharging a firearm in public charges, he officially took on the stage name YNW Melly in 2016. “YNW,” which can stand for either “Young New Wave” or “Young N**** World,” is a hip-hop collective consisting of multiple other artists.
After returning to jail in 2017 for violating his parole and being in possession of marijuana, YNW Melly released his first EP entitled Collect Call. The project had many features from many well-known rappers. The most notable were Lil B and John Wicks.
One year later, he released more YNW Melly songs, including “Virtual (Blue Balenciagas),” “Slang That Iron,” and “Melly the Menace.”
His music videos for these singles as well as “4 Real,” “Medium Fries,” and “Butter Pecan” quickly earned him recognition. As of January 2019, the latter three have built up a viewership of 26 million, 16 million, and 11 million views, respectively, on YouTube.
In August of that same year, he released his debut YNW Melly album, or mixtape, I Am You, which eventually reached the 192 spot on the Billboard 200 chart on January 10, 2019.
A week later, while still incarcerated for a second account of possession of marijuana, he released another mixtape, We All Shine, which had a total of 16 tracks. He brought more notable feature collaborations for the project, including with Kanye West for “Mixed Personalities,” which had an accompanying music video.

The second of YNW Melly’s albums was Melly vs. Melvin, released on Nov. 22, 2019, and peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 chart.
Just seven days later, he was featured on King Von’s single “Rollin.”
His stints in and out of jail continued to not stop him from moving forward in his music career. A remix of his “Suicidal” single was released on March 13, 2020, and featured late rapper and singer Juice Wrld. The song became YNW Mell’s second top 20 hit on the Hot 100 chart.
