YNW Melly’s Tattoos

YNW Melly is currently sporting eight tattoos on the upper areas of his body, particularly his face and neck.

Let’s start from the top and work our way down, shall we?

The upper left side of his forehead, just under the hairline, has a tattoo of a tiny broken heart with the words “broken heart” next to it.

Above his left eyebrow is the name “Melvin,” for his own name and his album, Melly vs. Melvin.

On the right side of his forehead are the words “90’s Baby,” hinting at his 1999 birth year, with the letters “YNW” just below those and above his right eyebrow.

On his right upper cheekbone, he has the number 17, in tribute to fellow rapper XXXTentacion

His other cheek has a heart tattoo again on the upper cheekbone.

On his neck, he has the names “JANA” and “JAMIE.” The latter is to represent his mother. The former is for his friend’s mother, Jana Thompson. Ironically, that friend, Anthony, is one of the two rappers he has been charged with killing.

YNW Melly’s only body tattoo can be found on his right arm.

Early Life

YNW Melly’s early life was not an easy one. As previously stated, he was raised by a single mother who could only afford for her and her son to live in one of the poorest parts of Gifford.

They were so poor that his mother struggled to pay for housing and even basic necessities. His rough upbringing led him to join a gang, the Bloods, when he was very young.

His involvement soon led to his first run-in with the law. In 2015, he was arrested for shooting at some students near Vero Beach High School. His charges led to a conviction, and he was in prison for several months.

Career

YNW Melly was 15 years old when he first started posting his original songs and raps to SoundCloud.

After being released from jail after his aggravated battery and assault, and discharging a firearm in public charges, he officially took on the stage name YNW Melly in 2016. “YNW,” which can stand for either “Young New Wave” or “Young N**** World,” is a hip-hop collective consisting of multiple other artists.

After returning to jail in 2017 for violating his parole and being in possession of marijuana, YNW Melly released his first EP entitled Collect Call. The project had many features from many well-known rappers. The most notable were Lil B and John Wicks.

One year later, he released more YNW Melly songs, including “Virtual (Blue Balenciagas),” “Slang That Iron,” and “Melly the Menace.”

His music videos for these singles as well as “4 Real,” “Medium Fries,” and “Butter Pecan” quickly earned him recognition. As of January 2019, the latter three have built up a viewership of 26 million, 16 million, and 11 million views, respectively, on YouTube.

In August of that same year, he released his debut YNW Melly album, or mixtape, I Am You, which eventually reached the 192 spot on the Billboard 200 chart on January 10, 2019.

A week later, while still incarcerated for a second account of possession of marijuana, he released another mixtape, We All Shine, which had a total of 16 tracks. He brought more notable feature collaborations for the project, including with Kanye West for “Mixed Personalities,” which had an accompanying music video.

By March 2019, he had earned a massive following on Spotify with more than 10 million monthly listeners and more than 200 million streams, the biggest of which was “Murder on My Mind.”

The second of YNW Melly’s albums was Melly vs. Melvin, released on Nov. 22, 2019, and peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 chart.

Just seven days later, he was featured on King Von’s single “Rollin.”

His stints in and out of jail continued to not stop him from moving forward in his music career. A remix of his “Suicidal” single was released on March 13, 2020, and featured late rapper and singer Juice Wrld. The song became YNW Mell’s second top 20 hit on the Hot 100 chart.

Considering the pending murder charges plaguing him, it did become a year before the world heard from YNW Melly again after “Suicidal” was released. On March 5, 2021, he called upon Kodak Black to release “Thugged Out.” He followed that up with such notable singles as “Bestfriend 4L,” featuring Lil Tjay, and “Pieces,” featuring Queen Naija. They were the lead-up to his next studio album, Just a Matter of Slime.

How Long is Melly Jailed For?

Currently, YNW Melly remains incarcerated at the Broward County Jail in Florida. He will stay there without bail until his retrial commences later this year.

If convicted, he could receive up to life in prison. That is if he avoids the death penalty, which is still a possibility despite it being thrown out in July 2022. It was reinstated as a possibility by an appellate judge in November 2022.

Is Melly Still Making Money?

Despite being in jail, YNW Melly is still making money thanks to many outlets that allow him to continually release his music. Some of the most significant ways include utilizing SoundCloud, and, in the case of his most recent album, Just a Matter of Slime, used pre-recorded vocals made before he was incarcerated.

Did Melly Order a Hit on His Mom?

YNW Melly has shown much love for his mom in the past, even having her name tattooed on his neck; however, it seems there is still a dark past between the two.

During his legal proceedings for his recent murder trial, prosecutors have also alluded to the disgraced rapper orchestrating the attempted murder of his mother. Court documents, released on June 26, 2023, to social media, show prosecutors have proof of the attempt through text exchanges.

“If you read his phone, there’s narcotics trafficking and firearms violations authorizing the killing of his mother,” prosecutors stated when asked about it. “Those are the things that you would consider ‘authorizing.’”

Just like with the murders of the two rappers, YNW Melly has continually maintained his innocence on this accusation as well. Instead, he has alluded that the entire allegation is part of the state’s agenda to get a conviction from the jury.
