Australian hard rock band Wolfmother sold out First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis on a Wednesday, February 24th, 2016. Despite their hit song “Woman” placed on the video game Rock Band, it was a mid-30’s kind of crowd.
The group shot out of the gates with one of their most popular songs “Victorious”, followed by “New Moon Rising” and the infamous “Woman” as third on the setlist. Surprising, considering most artists usually save their best for last.
The strong hair-game Aussies wasted no time with thoughtless stage banter between songs, and jumped right into the rest of their performance. Vocalist and guitarist Andrew Stockdale looked sternly into the eyes of his crowd while bassist/keyboardist Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett rocked out beside him.
The opener, Deap Vally was a female duo, which reminded me of a mixture between the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s and Phoebe from Friends, singing “Smelly Cat” at the Central Perk coffee shop. She was dressed in a bright yellow one-piece get up with dangly strings hanging from her sleeves; sort of like something Jimi Hendricks would wear. They didn’t have a bassist, which made her guitar stand out as extremely grungy with no low end, however the crowd cheered after each song they performed.
All in all, it was a great night to share with a mass of music loving Minnesotans!
