How Did Jack White Make His Money?

Jack White’s success is thanks to his part in The White Stripes as well as his later success with groups such as The Raconteurs, his solo career, his work as a producer, and his appearances in television and movies.

The Success of The White Stripes

The start of Jack White’s mainstream success is largely due to his work with Meg White as half of the iconic (and now Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame nominatedWhite Stripes. They formed the duo in 1997 after the latter started learning to play the drums.

Within a year, the White Stripes signed with their first label, Italy Records. They released their debut album, White Stripes, in 1999, and followed it up with De Stijl in 2000 and White Blood Cells in 2001.

White Blood Cells first earned them recognition as leaders in the garage rock revival. The legendary album featured popular White Stripes tracks like “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” and “Fell in Love with a Girl.”

They released their fourth album, Elephant, in 2003, which included their most popular and signature song, “Seven Nation Army.” It hit No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and remained there for three weeks. The duo also won the Best Rock Song Grammy Award for the single in 2004.

The duo continued to record, releasing their fifth album, Get Behind Me Satan, in 2005. They followed this with Icky Thump in 2007, their final album before announcing their disbandment on February 2, 2011.

It’s easy to see that the main source of Jack White’s net worth is his success with the White Stripes.

The Raconteurs

Jack White’s music career expanded beyond the White Stripes, both when they were still active and after.

In 2005 he began collaborating with Brendan Benson, which led to their single “Steady, as She Goes” and the formation of The Raconteurs.

The band, comprised of White, Benson, Jack Lawrence, and Patrick Keeler, recorded several albums which met mainstream success. Their debut album, Broken Boy Soldiers, hit the Top 10 on U.S. and U.K. charts and was nominated at the 2006 Grammy Awards for the Best Rock Album.

“Steady, as She Goes” was also nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

The quartet’s second album, Consolers of the Lonely, came out in 2008, with “Salute Your Solution” serving as its debut single. The group continued to release live albums over the years and released their third studio album, Help Us Stranger, in 2019.

Jack White’s Solo Success

In 2012, White released his first solo album Blunderbuss. He followed it up with Lazaretto in 2014.

He was also a member of the Dead Weather, which he formed in 2009. While on tour to promote the Raconteurs’ second album, White got sick with bronchitis, leading to Kills lead singer Alison Mosshart often having to fill in.

Because of the chemistry between White and Mosshart, they began to collaborate, and soon Dead Weather resulted from it.

Dead Weather consisted of White on drums and vocals, Mosshart on lead vocals, Jack Lawrence on bass, and Dean Fertita of the Queens of the Stone Age on keyboard and guitar.

The group released three studio albums and several singles.

More than just a member of the White Stripes, Jack White’s net worth has clearly been assisted by his solo work and collaborations with other bands.
