The Orwells performed a rowdy set at Triple Rock on Saturday, March 18. Chicago is known for their ever-growing underground punk scene and The Orwells are one of many bands to break out of that world. Their reckless energy is a bit infamous (note their 2014 Bonnaroo performance, their 2014 Letterman performance, and that time their set was cut short due to a fist fight on stage) but fans knew exactly what they were in for at an Orwells show.
The sold-out crowd moshed along despite a few technical difficulties. Whether it was a broken hi-hat stand or a few overzealous fans interrupting the set by hopping on stage, The Orwells powered through the inconveniences and played a solid show. They closed their set with “The Righteous One” off of their 2014 album Disgraceland, which transitioned seamlessly in to a cover of The Raconteurs’ “Steady As She Goes.”
This nationwide tour is in promotion of their third studio LP, Terrible Human Beings. The album stays true to The Orwell’s garage-rock roots with messy guitar riffs and frontman Mario Cuomo’s grungy vocals. Their single “They Put A Body In The Bayou” has received a decent amount of airplay on alternative radio as the band continues to find more mainstream success.
