Powerhouse, electronic-pop, husband-wife duo, Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn, intoxicated a sold-out crowd at Minneapolis’ Armory this August for their No Rules Sandy summer tour. Euphoric dub-drum-and-bass beats and energizing kick-jump-twists brought folks to their feet–a sweet combo of sweaty smiles and shimmies up front and wide-eyed gazes and sways in the back. Sylvan Esso has a way of completely enrapturing a space; an essential band to experience live.
The set celebrated newer work from 2022 studio album No Rules Sandy, a COVID-made whirlwind of unconstrained motion and creativity, while also showcasing the duo’s entire catalog, a mix of fan favorites, hit singles, and deep cuts. They kicked things off with a revved-up version of “Alarm,” a glistening acid lead and bass-heavy house beats accompanied by Amelia’s warm singalong vocals.
Soon after, they immediately dodged into less-obvious territory, trading in the radio-friendly singalong poppiness for the minimal Pong-like beats of “Train” followed by the ambient moodiness of “Dress.” A callback to their 2014 self-titled debut, long-time fans immediately erupted into cheers as the signature, minimal sub-bass vibrated throughout the space. You know, the kind of deep bass that simultaneously rattles your chest and calms your nervous system.
Building on the energy, “Kick Jump Twist” tipped the scales with more bubbly synthesizers and familiar favorite “Die Young” led to a powerful, audience-led chorus. Sanborn swayed behind his machines, carrying a content and calm energy, while Amelia playfully bounced across the stage showing off eye-high kicks and the occasional cartwheel.
Highlight of the night–Amelia’s dramatic costume change from cyberpunk, leather two-piece to what looked like a gigantic, multi-colored loofah. A bouncy, ball of color, you could barely make out her heads and outstretched arms.
There was something for every shade and flavor of Sylvan Esso fan over the course of 20+ songs, from the feel-good newcomer to the diehard who fell under the band’s spell nearly a decade ago. The couple emanated a truly warm and gracious presence and seemed genuinely excited to be there.
If you’re a fan of unconventional, electronic bands that aren’t afraid to experiment and are always down to dance, make sure to catch Sylvan Esso for a leg of their summer tour.
