In a world full of songwriters, artists, and singers, there seem to be very few storytellers as passionate as Jason Isbell. Every song tells a story that resonates with life, love, and loss. Oft-revered bards like Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, Roger Waters, and Bruce Springsteen all come to mind, but Isbell is a novelist when it comes to penning tunes that tackle complex emotions like anxiety.
Last night, the sold-out crowd at the Palace Theater recognized this gift, singing along to every masterful word while smiling, laughing, and even crying. Isbell and hist band the 400 Unit performed an incredible set, delivering songs from his time with the Drive-by Truckers and his current Grammy Award-winning masterpiece Weathervanes.
The band stopped and restarted a few times, quieting the crowd in order for staff to address medical emergencies in the audience. Once taken care of, the band would start over, and the theater would launch into a sing-along.
Isbell is a national treasure, and the 400 Unit has never sounded better. The 16-song set was highlighted with an encore of the song “Miles,” which brought focus to Isbell’s David Gilmour-adjacent guitar sound, followed by his 2018 hit “Vampires” that set tears to some eyes.
