In 1985 Amy Ray and Emily Saliers released their self-titled EP Indigo girls. Thirty-two years and eighteen albums later they brought their extensive collection to two sold out nights as part of the Minnesota Zoo music series.
Opening for the Indigo girls was new artist Becky Warren whose bluesy voice and southern twang seemed to surprised the crowd supporting her release War Surplus. Rarely do you see an artist come who captures the heart and soul of an audience who clearly was not there to see the opening act.
After a quick intermission, the Indigo girls took the stage without the support of a backup band performing Jonas and Ezekiel. Going back to how they started, just the two of them on stage singing classics, they also sprinkled in some new material and even played a few hidden tracks from their previous albums along the way.
Amy’s voice sounded better than ever while Emily seemed to struggle a little, though the harmonizing together proved to be why they have been selling out venues for over thirty years. As the crowd sang along to Indigo essentials such as Ghost and Up On The Watershed, it was the new material like Spread The Pain that will quickly go down as Indio Girl classics.
The girls proved to hold a strong and faithful following in the Twin Cities by listening to the crowd sing over them (some even crying) as they performed the Power Of Two . Not only did they certainly please their die hard fans, but surely picked up a handful of new followers as well.
Catch the girls on tour!
