Career
Upon making his debut with Manchester United in October 2004, Gerard Piqué had a fairly slow start with the organization upon replacing John O’Shea in the League Cup at Crewe Alexandria. He then was officially on the regular roster in January 2005 for the FA Cup. Ten months later, on October 15, 2005, he made his Premier League debut, and his first league start just a few months later on March 29, 2006.
While he had signed a new contract at this time, he eventually went on loan with the Real Zaragoza of La Liga club, for which he was featured in 20 games. After a successful run, it was then revealed in May 2007 that he would stay at Old Trafford. This led to him making nine league appearances throughout the 2007-08 season.
Later, during the UEFA Champions League, he had a dynamite performance, scoring the first of Manchester United’s four goals in the match, which they eventually won. He later did the same in their match against Roma on December 12, 2007.
Piqué eventually returned to Barcelona on May 27, 2008, signing a four-year contract. He later scored his first goal for the team during the 2008-09 Champions League win that November. It seemed to be the impetus for a major career of continued goals as he became more and more skilled at the sport. With all that backing him up, it was no wonder that he became such a major part of Barcelona’s success over the years.
This included being one of only a few players to be a part of a club that won the treble (domestic league, domestic cup, and European Cup) on two separate occasions. The others on both those teams include Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, and Dani Alves.
He officially retired from the team in 2022, having already previously retired from the national team following the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
“It has been 25 years since I joined Barca. I left, and I came back,” Piqué said. “Football has given me everything. I have always said that I would not be in any other team after I left Barca, and that is how it will be.”
Over the years, Piqué also had quite the international career both in youth and senior leagues, most notably as a member of the Spain under-19 team, won the 2005 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Poland, and the senior squad, scoring the only goal when Spain won over Turkey in the 2010 World Cup qualifier in Madrid.
Outside of his professional football career, Piqué is also the owner of FC Andorra, an Andorran club.
Awards and Recognitions
Along with Gerard Piqué’s many league championships with Manchester United, Barcelona, and the Spanish national team, he has also received many awards and decorations as an individual player over the years. These have included such titles as La Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year for the 2008-09 season, the UEFA Team of the Year (2010-2012, 2015-2016), and Footballer of the Year in Catalonia in 2019.
In 2011, he was also decorated with the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit.
