In case you’ve been living under a rock in preparation of the coming winter months, I should inform you that you missed quite a show. The Alternative Press Tour came to Mill City Nights in Minneapolis on October 29th. The night started with the UK pop punk band, As It Is. Never heard of them? Well, although this band was formed in the UK, their vocalist, Patty Walters, happens to be a Minnesota local!
Perhaps it was his excitement for this homecoming, or maybe it was just his pop punk nature, but there was no standing still from Patty during the entire set. His constant jumping and high kicks rubbed off onto the crowd as their high energy set pumped up spectators until their time was up.
Long Beach duo, This Wild Life, were up next. In contrast to their predecessors, Kevin and Anthony, slowed it down with their acoustics and moving vocals. This change in pace allowed the crowd to relax and prepare their emotions for the moody acts to follow.
Illinois sad boys, otherwise known as Real Friends, maintained the feels while simultaneously bringing the energy back up. A circle pit formed and crowd surfers started flowing. They did an incredible job of balancing rowdiness and passion to prepare the audience for the headliner.
After being long awaited, Mayday Parade came out with a bang! Sparing no expense, the stage flooded with explosive lights and smoke. Even after being a band for ten years, Mayday still has a strong following of loyal fans. They were able to captivate the crowd early on and by the end, the crowd was screaming the lyrics louder than vocalist, Derek Sanders was.
Noticing this, the band walked off the stage and let the screaming fans finish the rest of a song: which they did beautifully, by the way. They then proceeded to beg for an encore, which Mayday Parade so graciously delivered. Their set was made up of multiple songs from their new album, Black Lines, as well as their classics that most of us grew up listening to. One song they performed titled, “Just Say You’re Not Into It,” dates all the way back to 2005!
All in all, Mayday Parade did a fantastic job of bringing together fans (old and new) for a night to celebrate their ten year anniversary.
