Dive into The Cut: The NightCry’s newest single, Interview with bassist Shana Fairchild

Let me start by saying I love everything about the 1980s; especially the music. Those songs give me an incredible rush of dopamine induced nostalgia. If I could bottle it and mainline it into my veins everyday, I would.

It’s unfortunate that there’s only a limited amount of songs from that era. After nearing the end of the same 80’s playlist I always listen to, I thought, wouldn’t it be amazing if someone out there made new 80s songs?

If you’ve also thought the same, I’ve got good news for you. I found that someone, and that someone is The NightCry.

The NightCry just released their new single, “The Cut” alongside their debut album, ‘Black Roses, Violet Hearts.’ Self described as the perfect blend of the 80’s and modern day composition, their synth selection, Roland drum machine beats, and catchy guitar riffs paired with Vincent Vuarnet’s Starman-like vocals will take you back in time, but in an undiscovered way.

So put on your headphones, press play, close your eyes, and imagine cruising down a nice stretch of asphalt in your 1987 Toyota MR2 toward the proverbial sunset.

MIM: Can you walk us through the creation process of “The Cut”?

Shana: The Cut started out sounding completely different. We each had written bits and pieces and then put them all together to create this song. It was a pretty cool one, too, if I’m completely honest. But when we all came together in the studio, we changed some things. Then changed a few more. And we ended up with this amazing song!

This particular single was a really cool experience for me. It was the first time for me recording in a professional studio (Shout out to Joe Reineke at Temple of the Trees Studio) It was an eye opener to see what all goes into it. A fun eye opener though! I really learned a lot and am so thankful to have been a part of it.

MIM: What is the meaning of the song?

Shana: A song can mean many things depending on who you are and how life has treated you. The sounds and the lyrics can mean one thing to you and something completely different to the person standing next to you.

As a band, the theme of The Cut is: The moments you choose one person over all others—a daily act of commitment, loyalty, and standing tall. For me it feels a little more personal. This song reminds me of myself.

You go through life experiencing traumas big and small. All of these stack up to build a wall of safety, but you realize it doesn’t just keep the danger out. It’s a lie and you’re missing out on the good also.

It’s not easy to break those walls down alone. The wounds don’t heal on their own. You see that there’s helpers out there, whether it’s friends, family, pets… you just have to let them make that first cut and come in and help.”

MIM: Every artist has influences. Who helped shape your sound, and in what ways?

Shana: I get inspiration from all sorts of music. My mom was a fitness instructor, so I grew up listening to music with very steady beats. I remember hearing C+C Music Factory a lot. Haha. So I got dancey music from her. I got things like Sublime and Korn from my older brother. And we can’t forget my love for Ace of Base and 311.

MIM: How old were you when you began creating music?

Shana: I’ve always been around music. My grandpa was a pastor of a small church and my grandma, aunt, and mom did the music part of the service. I sang a little bit in choir and took piano lessons for a few years, but I was super shy and hated the piano recitals with a passion.

People that knew me as a kid think it’s crazy that I get up on stage now! I didn’t get serious about music until 2019 when one of my best friends unceremoniously alerted me that her band needed a bass player and that bass player was going to be me and that we had a show in a few weeks.

Mind you, I had never played bass. I had no idea what I was doing. But I did it! Fast forward to 2026, and now I’m in The NightCry… funny enough with that same friend, Andreka, our lead guitarist.

MIM: Do you have any hidden talents or unusual quirks?

Shana: I’m a stained glass artist, but that’s been put on the backburner for a little bit.

MIM: If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self starting out in music, what would it be?

Shana: Stay out of your own way! Things will be hard and scary sometimes, but surrounding yourself with amazing people helps.

MIM: What can listeners look forward to from you?

Shana: Keep and eye out for our newest music video that is in the works!
