ON THE RADAR: Meet the Coolest Minnesota Family Reggae band, NUG

“Please! No more bands!” Jason Buchan’s wife, Melissa begged him as he made his departure from one of many musical groups he had been a member of over the years.

Approaching forty-eight years of age, but young at heart, Jason has spent the majority of his life exercising his creativity through the love of Reggae music.

However, band practice and bar shows had caused Buchan to be away from his wife and kids more than his family preferred.

She made him a deal that if he is to play in another band, it had to be with their two sons, Mack and Tucker, who were only ten and eight years old at the time.

That’s all he needed to hear. Before she knew it, the Buchan boys were playing alongside their dad on stage in a groovy Reggae band named after a small amount of weed; NUG.

When asked about the name, Jason commented, “We couldn’t think of anything else that stuck. My buddy from Willmar actually came up with it one day. Made sense for the style of music we were playing.”

With Jason on guitar and vocals, Mack on drums, and Tucker on Bass, they decided to expand their roster by acquiring Adam Smith, who became their in-the-pocket drummer (while Mack jumped to bongos), Connor Cregeen came in whaling on guitar, while borrowing the talented Steve Schmidt from Rochester on the keys.

With the Buchan crew reigning from the small town of Ceylon, Minnesota (population 350), NUG has been a diamond in the rough just waiting to be discovered.
