Marian Hill Brings “Down” Tour to First Avenue

Vocalist Samantha Gongol and producer Jeremy Lloyd are on the road again in promotion of their 2016 debut album, Act One, and returned to the mainroom on June 1. The sold-out crowd brought a rave atmosphere to the venue with concertgoers spinning poi and wearing beaded kandi bracelets up and down their arms- not something typically seen at First Avenue, but it helped set the mood.

The electronic duo dramatically opened their set with their smash hit, “Down,” showcasing Gongol’s effortless, airy riffs. Despite being a predominantly two-piece band, their energy and showmanship filled the room. Gongol utilized the entire stage while Lloyd live-mixed beats and vocals, and their lighting director deserves credit for creating a lively ambiance.

They also brought saxophone and bass player, Steve Davit, on the road with them. Davit  is credited on songs “Mistaken” and “oh yeah i love u,” but was featured heavily throughout the night. Davit seemed to be a fan-favorite as the audience erupted with applause every time he took center stage. The addition of a live instrument on top of electronic beats provided a fun, unique dynamic.

“Down” was recently used for an Apple commercial which helped it gain mainstream attention and crack the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 21. Perhaps the newfound popularity is why they decided to both open and close with the track.
