Saint Paul rapper Taylor J has been making moves for over a decade. If the name isn’t familiar, you’ll be surprised to hear Taylor J has collaborated with well-known names like Nipsey Hussle, Jazze Pha, Gucci Mane and more.

One of his music videos even got a retweet from Kayne West. Take a listen to our interview with Taylor J and check out his brand new album, Roses, released May 31st, 2019.

Bo: Dude, you’ve been rapping since you were 11 years old.

Taylor J: Yes, sir. Yes, sir, since 2003.

Bo: That is insane. Do you have like a family that’s really been into music, that kind of influenced you?

Taylor J: That guy right there, man (points off camera). My older brother, at the time and still today, he’s always been a role model for me. I always looked up to him and always wanted to do whatever he was doing and shit.

So when he told me he was doing the music, he was like, “Man, you should just try to write some and just see how you do, how it comes out.” I’m like, “Cool, let me check it out, and let me try it.”

The first one I ever wrote, he was like, “Bro, that’s crazy. That’s dope. Your shit’s hard, bro.” I literally just been doing it ever since that day.

Man, bro. Kanye just retweeted your shit.

Bo: Kanye West retweeted the video for your song, “Jumanji”. How did that happen?

Taylor J: Bro, honestly, I don’t know. I was in traffic one day. I was on my way to pick my mom up. I was going to go eat with my family, and I got a call from my manager and he was just like, “Man, bro. Kanye just retweeted your shit.”

So I went and looked, and it was so much shit on there I couldn’t even find it, because my notifications were just crazy, bro. It was just by the grace of God.

Bo: You’ve got a record that came out May 31st. It’s called Roses, 13 tracks. Can we expect any collaborations or features on Roses?

Taylor J: I don’t have any features from any artists on this project. I really wanted to just go in on my own. I felt like I had a point to make and a point to get across with this project.

So I really wanted just get, real personal with it coming from me. But my next project, I’m already in the works of it right now, bro.

Taylor J: I’m going to have a lot of fun on my next project. It might just be a mixtape or some? I’ll go crazy with the features and link with my other rapper friends.

But for now I just want to make sure that people understand who Taylor is and where Taylor’s coming from, just for this initial one, because even though it’s my third album, this is just a good big time for me and my career, to where it feels like an introduction, still, to a lot of people.
