Rock n/ roll icon Carlos Santana played to a full house at Treasure Island’s event center last Friday night. He brought hours of celebration and empowerment through an ensemble of keys, drums, and some singing guitars.
For the first ten minutes, Carlos went around the stage and let each band member say hello through their own solo.
It’s beautiful to see nine smiling people on stage doing what they do best: moving others through the sound of music.
Bass guitarist Benny Rietveld pleased the hometown crowd with a bass solo that slowly transitioned into Purple Rain, a piece he’s perfected.
Santana mentioned their goal was to achieve “spiritual orgasm,” which he certainly achieved.
A big highlight was legendary drummer Cindy Blackman letting the group breathe for five minutes with an unrelenting solo.
“We want to create mystical medicine music. To heal a twisted, crooked world, infected with fear, darkness and ignorance.”
“We want to help you remember that you have […] divine powers to create blessings and miracles. That’s what we want to do.”
“Let’s smoke some reefer.”
-Carlos Santana
Memorable moments were around all night. There was no reefer, but the incense at Carlos’ feet was a nice touch. A lucky few were hand-picked to receive the coveted guitar pick, and a couple of kids were even brought on stage to play alongside the group.
74-year-old Santana and his stellar band delivered a wonderful, enriching performance.
