After a six-year hiatus, the genre-melding “virtual” group, Gorillaz, hit the Roy Wilkins Auditorium last night in promotion of their latest LP, Humanz. Co-created by visual artist, Jamie Hewlett, and musician, Damon Albarn, the band composed of animated characters Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs.
Gorillaz live shows feature Albarn’s lead vocals supported by an extensive live band and the virtual band members on the LED screens. Albarn uses a variety of manipulation effects to add dimension along with six backup singers to round out the vocals.
Support acts Vince Staples and Danny Brown were unexpectedly brought out mid-set and featured on their collaborative tracks “Ascension” and “Submission” respectively.
The diverse crowd was relatively tame throughout the night, but incredibly responsive to hit songs “Feel Good Inc.” and “Clint Eastwood.”
