Mark your calendars, folks: Cansei de Ser Sexy, also known as “CSS,” are heading to Minneapolis next week as part of the “It’s Been a Number of Years Tour,” their first in the States in 11 years.

If you haven’t heard of CSS before, they are a four piece band out of Brazil that are basically an ear worm factory. You remember “Music is My Hot, Hot Sex,” don’t you? Of course you do. It got stuck in your head for months.

CSS came onto the scene at a real high point of indie music, and their poppy, synth-heavy sound – along with a lot of tongue in cheek lyrics – made them favorites of radio DJ’s and live audiences alike. Even their name falls in line with that branding, as it translates to “tired of being sexy.”

Ironically, too much successful branding might have been the reason the band members walked away from the project in 2014. They originally formed the band as a means to an end: getting out of work early to go play clubs. According to their bandleader and vocalist, Lovefoxx, “In São Paulo, if you did creative things, it was easier to get off work to perform shows.”

Eventually, the band became too much like work for its four members. The grind of pushing out new music to tour behind for nine months out of the year took the fun out of it. So they took their talents elsewhere for a spell.

Fast forward to current day, and they’re back on the road. But why now, you might ask? They’re refreshingly honest in saying that promoter interest prompted them to get back together and dust off the old catalog.

So to paraphrase the band: since the cycle of life can’t be stopped and trends come back after 20 years, they gave in to demand and are honored to do a celebration tour. Sing the hits and album tracks, jump around, make jokes, reconnect with this energy that only CSS delivers to us, and give it a go. For the naïve times, for the raw and crazy, to fall in love again in the clubs, once more.

So come on out and shake your booty with CSS at the Fine Line on Thursday, May 9th, on an 11-stop tour that ends at the amazing “Just Like Heaven” festival in California.

CSS US Tour 2024

I tell the story of the energy transfer between people who play music and that music's listeners. I photograph and write about festivals and concerts, which I've attended for three decades. I'm also the tall guy you probably got stuck behind at a show. First concert: Nirvana at Roy Wilkins Auditorium, Dec 1993. Yes, I am old. Tall and old.
