Nearly two decades after bursting on the scene, Canadian artist Lights continues to sell out rooms. This week she sold out Saint Paul’s Amsterdam Bar and Hall on her “Come And Get Your Girl” Tour. Touring behind her sixth studio album, “A6”, Lights has come a long way since becoming a MySpace profile song mainstay.

Notable for her smooth and calming voice and ethereal synths, Lights continues to deliver dreamy alt pop on her latest album. “A6” looks back at her journey so far, and takes a stance in the present, celebrating who she is now and the joy of being in the moment.

This emphasis on enjoying the present was felt throughout the show. Her interaction with the audience was genuine as she jumped into the pit with everyone, threw out paper airplanes with personalized notes, and gave fans plenty of moments to finish the words to each song.

Taking note of the struggles we have been facing in the Twin Cities, Lights grounded us in solidarity and highlighted the importance of being together in community, healing through song, and resisting hate. Admitting she didn’t have a protest song, she instead played a meaningful love song.

Throughout the night, there were special moments where her personality and connection the fans shined bright. Whether it’s the years long relationship she’s been building with listeners since 2009, or the emotionally liberating content of her songs, there is something about her music that sparks joy.

Like many, I first discovered Lights in the early 2010s. But it wasn’t until I met my now wife that I would get really into her music. Since then, I’ve gone on to see Lights three times. And if my wife’s dancing and smile was any indication, this was her best show yet.

At this point in her career, Lights has firmly established herself as one of the top performers in the scene. I would even argue that she is very underrated. She has been concisely releasing sincere and engaging music for nearly two decades and has always showed up with powerful energy.

With a great balance of old favorites like “River” and “Running with the Boys”, and stand outs like “Prodigal Daughter” or latest single “Damage”, the show was ethereal joy.

As the night concluded with an encore of “Up We Go” and new song “Education”, fans left the show with a firm reminder of why Lights is a scene queen. Her shows stand out as the most fun you will have at a concert this year.
