April 20th, your stoner friend’s favorite day of the year! Whether you’re a cannabis enthusiast or not, the annual celebration of the “devils lettuce” grows larger and larger every year, with more and more events popping up centered around the “holiday.”

While the age-old stereotype of the consumer of marijuana tending to sit at home not doing anything is understandable, many people, mainly your “sativa” enthusiasts, like to get out of the house to celebrate the holiday as well!

So, here is a list of some of the events happening on 4/20 in Minneapolis & St. Paul, most of which will likely be “4/20 friendly” for you to surround yourself with like-minded people and celebrate the day!

Yung Gravy – Varsity Theater

If I had to guess one show that would be the “most” 4/20-friendly, it would likely be this one. Matthew Hauri, known professionally as Yung Gravy, is a rapper and songwriter from Rochester, Minnesota. He is known for his 2016 single “Mr. Clean”. Other top hits include, “1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot” and his 2018 single “Alley Oop” feat. Lil Baby.

Rolling Stoners w/ Little Man – The Cabooze

Celebrating the music of The Rolling Stones as a fixture in the Minneapolis music scene, The Rolling Stoners deliver straight-up rock n’ roll the way our forefathers intended. These stoners are not a tribute band per se, but a collective of dearest pals who admire the early era Stones live performances. As a 4/20 treat, the Rolling Stoners will kick off their show performing the album Let It Bleed cover-to-cover in honor of its’ 50th Anniversary.

Smokin’ Grass 420 featuring Kitchen Dwellers – Whiskey Junction

Happening right next door to The Cabooze, this would obviously be another show that is pretty high up on the list of 4/20-friendliness. Performing alongside Kitchen Dwellers at this 4/20-themed event are LazyLighting420, Armchair Boogie, and special guests from the land where marijuana is legal, Meadow Mountain and Tenth Mountain Division from Colorado.

Anvil w/ Don Jamieson – Turf Club

This event was chosen for our fellow stoners of the previous generation. Anvil is a Canadian heavy metal band from Toronto, Ontario, formed in 1978. To date, the band has released sixteen studio albums and has been cited as having influenced many notable heavy metal groups, including Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, and Metallica.

Busted 4/20 Presented by Herobust – Skyway Theatre

Certainly not known for its hard limits on drug use, Skyway Theatre is putting on their own 4/20-themed event this year. After a solid summer of putting bassheads into neck braces at Lollapalooza, EDC, and Electric Forest, Herobust is ready to show off some new music by releasing his new single, “WTF,” a track that is pretty well explained by its title, with suspenseful builds that lead to a drop that will have everyone screaming WHAT THE F*CK?!

Jon Anderson of Yes: 1000 Hands Tour – The Fitzgerald Theater

Once again, this event is likely for the fellow stoners of a previous generation. Jon Anderson is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable voices in progressive rock as the lead vocalist and creative force behind Yes. While I certainly wouldn’t recommend attempting to “light up” inside The Fitzgerald, this could be a really fun event to hotbox beforehand.

Erotic City w/ Lenka Paris, DJ Shannon Blowtorch, Mike 2600, Brother Jules and More! – First Avenue

“If I learned anything with my 25+ years dealing with musical genius (Prince), Rhythm unifies all souls and hearts! What the “PURPLE FAM” can expect from me that night is heart, head pounding rhythm that will not only be FUNKY, but will help in preserving a LEGACY that took 57 years to manifest! Welcome 2 the Dawn!” – Brother Jules

Midwest Funk Association w/ Ron Trent – 7th St Entry

As we mark the third rotation since Prince left this Earthly Plane, we gather once again not to hang our heads and cry but to celebrate the spirit of the patron saint of Minneapolis on the dance floor, where it is meant to be done. On this night, we pay tribute not just by playing music he created, but by exploring the sounds that influenced him and that he influenced. On this night, we are not from Minneapolis, or from Chicago or Detroit. We are from the Midwest. And that is what this event is all about.

There are plenty of other shows happening in an around the Twin Cities on April 20th, but these are the ones that I think would be most enjoyable to attend while out celebrating the wonderful holiday.

Happy 4/20, everyone! Enjoy yourselves and make responsible decisions!
